Mattel unveils Barbie Calavera Catrina for Day of the Dead

Mattel has unveiled the Barbie Calavera Catrina, the eighth edition in its Signature line dedicated to the Day of the Dead. Designed in Mexico by Angel Kent, the premium doll is inspired by the iconic ‘La Catrina’ illustrations of José Guadalupe Posada.

The doll features a high-fashion aesthetic that blends traditional Mexican elements with theatrical elegance. Key design details include a monumental black dress, white lace, bone-patterned designs on the chest, and ornamental details reminiscent of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The look is completed with a large black fan decorated with a skull.

Rafael Álvarez, Mattel’s marketing director for Mexico and Latin America, noted that Mexico is the largest market for this product, though collectors worldwide can acquire it through Mattel Creations. The creative process for these designs typically spans two years, reflecting the depth of cultural research and artistic development involved in the collection.
