Influenza season 2026-2027 may see fewer but more severe cases

Matteo Bassetti, director of the infectious diseases clinic at Irccs San Martino, warns that the 2026-2027 influenza season may feature fewer total cases but more severe illnesses. This prediction is based on observations from the Southern Hemisphere, specifically Australia, where a lower number of infections was accompanied by an increase in hospitalizations. The circulating strains identified include H3N2 and H1N1, which are classic Influenza A viruses.

Bassetti emphasizes the critical importance of vaccination, particularly for vulnerable populations and the elderly, noting that failure to vaccinate those over 75 poses a significant risk to the healthcare system. He advocates for universal vaccination across all age groups.

In preparation for the season, the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have authorized nine vaccines for the 2026-2027 campaign. These include products from manufacturers such as Sanofi, GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca, and Seqirus, updated according to World Health Organization recommendations. Additionally, medical experts have noted that true influenza is characterized by a sudden onset of fever above 38 degrees, respiratory symptoms, and systemic issues like muscle pain and extreme fatigue.
