Matthew Mayich hospitalized after collapse during Arizona State training

Matthew Mayich, a 21-year-old hockey player and former St. Louis Blues draft pick, is fighting for his life following a medical emergency during an outdoor training session at Arizona State University.

The incident occurred on August 20 during the first day of formal NCAA-permitted activities for the Sun Devils. Reports indicate the training session took place on a heated field in Tempe, shortly after Mayich had transferred to the university. There are allegations that Arizona State may have disregarded heat safety policies, as the athlete had not undergone the recommended seven to 14-day acclimatization period for the desert climate.

The session was reportedly led by Tim Ziesel, a former Green Beret working as an external contractor, rather than a hockey coach. Mayich’s family is calling for an investigation, stating, “Something went wrong,” as the athlete remains hospitalized at St. Joseph’s in Phoenix.
