Matthew Mayich remains in coma after ASU hockey workout collapse
Matthew Mayich, a 21-year-old Arizona State University hockey player and NHL prospect drafted by the St. Louis Blues, remains in a coma following a collapse during an outdoor workout on August 20. His parents, John and Christina Mayich, stated that the collapse was caused by heat stroke rather than a heart condition, noting that the early-morning workout occurred in high temperatures.
The incident has prompted a formal investigation by the Arizona State Police Department into the hockey team’s workout conditions. Additionally, the Professional Hockey Players' Association has addressed the situation, highlighting the need for better protections for young athletes and the pressure they may feel to remain silent about health concerns or exhaustion.
While the family’s attorney reported that some teammates are “scared” to speak about the incident, John Mayich expressed that the family holds no grudge against the players. The university is currently reviewing the circumstances surrounding the workout.
