Matthew Mayich remains in coma after ASU workout collapse

Matthew Mayich, a 21-year-old Canadian hockey player and St. Louis Blues prospect, remains in a coma following a medical emergency during an outdoor workout at Arizona State University (ASU) on August 20.

The conditioning session, described by the athlete's attorney, Rob Carey, as “grueling” and “onerous,” was conducted in extreme desert heat reaching approximately 41 degrees Celsius (106 degrees Fahrenheit). The workout was led by a veteran former military instructor and involved high-intensity drills such as sprints, planks, and bear crawls.

Reports indicate that Mayich showed signs of distress prior to his collapse. His attorney stated that the player has “zero chance of recovery.” The family is seeking answers and has called for an independent investigation into the circumstances of the training session.

ASU has stated it is conducting a thorough review of the incident, with athletic director Graham Rossini noting the university is “reviewing the facts and understanding the scenario.” Mayich is currently hospitalized at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix.
