Maui police arrest ninth person in Kāʻanapali riot investigation

The Maui Police Department has arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with a July 17 riot and assault at the Kāʻanapali Aliʻi vacation residences in Lahaina. This marks the ninth arrest related to the incident, which involved a group of approximately 30 people near a resort pool area.

Prior to this arrest, authorities had detained seven teenagers ranging in age from 14 to 17 and a 20-year-old man from Makawao. Following processing, the Family Court authorized the release of the eight juveniles into the custody of their parents.

Investigators are currently working to determine if the incident was motivated by racial bias or gang-related activity. The FBI is collaborating with local police to determine if federal charges are warranted. While a California family reported being targeted by local teenagers, police stated they have not yet determined if the incident was racially motivated.
