Maui resort hate-crime incident
Overview
On July 17, 2026, a family from California vacationing at the Kaanapali Alii resort in Lahaina, Maui, was attacked by a large group of local youths. Police reports described a melee involving approximately 30 people that began near the pool and spread to the barbecue area. Six family members required medical treatment, including one man who suffered a severe head wound requiring 13 staples after being struck with a chair. The family reported that attackers used the Hawaiian slur “haole” and shouted anti-white threats.
As the investigation progressed, authorities made several arrests. Initially, a 20-year-old resident was arrested for assault and later released. By late July, six teenagers aged 14 to 17 were taken into custody on suspicion of riot and felony assault.
By August 8, the Maui Police Department confirmed nine total arrests related to the incident, including a 16-year-old boy. Prior to this, seven teenagers and the 20-year-old man had been detained; the juveniles were subsequently released to their parents via Family Court. Investigators are working with the FBI to determine if the assault was motivated by racial bias or gang-related activity, though police have not yet officially determined if the incident qualifies as a hate crime.
