Maui teens arrested after Lahaina resort riot and alleged hate crime
On July 17, a disturbance at the Kaanapali Alii vacation residences in Lahaina, Maui, escalated into a riot and assault involving about 30 people, including a family from California. Maui Police Department officers arrived around 10:10 p.m., found 10‑15 individuals gathered near the pool area, and reported several visible injuries.
Detectives subsequently arrested six teenagers, ages 14 to 17, on suspicion of riot and felony assault. Three additional teens were taken into custody on Tuesday, bringing the total to six arrests. The investigation is being treated as a riot and possible hate‑crime incident, though no charges have yet been filed. The case has attracted national attention and sparked debate over whether the assault was racially motivated. After booking, the teens were released to their parents.
