Mauritanian Coast Guard rescues 260 migrants off Nouakchott
The Mauritanian Coast Guard rescued approximately 260 migrants from two vessels off the coast of Nouakchott. The group, which includes 17 children and 61 women, had been at sea for about one week.
According to official reports, the migrants departed from Banjul, The Gambia, and were found in a state of shock due to severe shortages of food and fuel, as well as navigation difficulties. The rescued individuals include 132 citizens of Senegal, 120 from The Gambia, 4 from Guinea, and others from various West African nations.
The Atlantic route toward the Canary Islands remains one of the most dangerous migration paths to Europe, frequently involving overcrowded and unsuitable vessels.
