West African migrant trafficking and maritime rescues

Overview

Authorities in West Africa continue to engage in significant maritime rescues and anti-trafficking operations. In Mauritania, the coast guard rescued approximately 260 migrants—including 132 Senegalese, 120 Gambians, four Guineans, two Nigerians, two Malians, and others—after they spent roughly seven days at sea on two vessels departing from Banjul, Gambia. The rescued group, which includes 61 women and 17 children, was found off the coast of Nouakchott in a state of shock due to severe food and fuel shortages and navigation difficulties.

In Senegal, the National Division for the Fight against Migrant Trafficking (DNLT) has intensified its efforts. Following the dismantling of a smuggling network in Kafountine and several interceptions in the Fatick and Saint-Louis regions, the DNLT conducted nine separate operations across the country, including in Saint-Louis and Karang. These operations resulted in the arrest and referral of 28 individuals to the prosecutor's office on charges including maritime migrant trafficking, attempted irregular emigration, fraud, and endangering lives. Between October 20 and 22, 2026, gendarmerie units in the Fatick region conducted three operations that detained 378 individuals. These included an interception of 47 people using drone support, a second operation near the Iranne bolong on Bassoul Island that detained 208 individuals and seized 5,800 liters of fuel, and a joint river patrol that discovered 102 candidates abandoned on an island.

In The Gambia, the Immigration Department intercepted 229 suspected irregular migrants and arrested eight alleged smugglers during operations along the West Coast Region on October 23 and 24, 2026. One operation in Tanji intercepted 45 individuals, while an overnight patrol near the Kartong border post, conducted with Spain’s Guardia Civil, intercepted 184 people, including 15 minors.
