Mauritius police hunt suspect in 156 kg cannabis smuggling case

The Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (Adsu) is conducting an investigation into a failed attempt to import approximately 156 kg of cannabis from Réunion to Mauritius. The drugs, distributed in ten black bags, were seized by authorities in Bras-Panon, Réunion, after a speedboat intended to collect the shipment fled upon spotting officials.

Police are actively searching for Shaan Kumar Choolun, also known as Mithun, a 43-year-old former president of the Eco Deer Park Association. Choolun is suspected of playing a role in organizing the maritime expedition. He has previous links to the ‘Franklin’ investigation and money laundering allegations.

Three other suspects, including Gulshan Govind—husband of MP Véronique Leu-Govind—along with Ravindra Chimajee and Daniel José Auguste, have been arrested and detained. During court proceedings, police indicated they possess CCTV footage and statements regarding the case, though specific details remain withheld to protect the ongoing investigation. Authorities have warned that harboring a wanted person is a criminal offense.
