Cannabis trafficking and consumption in Mauritius
Overview
Authorities in Mauritius are addressing various forms of cannabis-related illicit activity, ranging from local consumption trends to large-scale maritime smuggling.
In Mahébourg, the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) identified a trend involving cannabis-infused gummies, locally called ‘gom gandia’. These candies, designed to resemble harmless confectionery, were seized during a search of a residence in Rose-Belle, leading to the arrest of a 29-year-old man.
Simultaneously, a major investigation is underway regarding a failed attempt to import approximately 156 kg of cannabis from Réunion to Mauritius. The shipment, contained in ten black bags, was intercepted in Bras-Panon, Réunion, after a speedboat fled from officials. The ADSU is currently searching for Shaan Kumar Choolun, a suspect believed to have organized the maritime expedition. Three other individuals have been arrested and detained in connection with the case.
