Max Pechstein Retrospective Opens at Lentos Museum in Linz

The Lentos Museum of Art in Linz has opened a comprehensive retrospective of German avant‑garde painter Max Pechstein. The exhibition showcases works from all phases of his career, including his South Sea paintings, many of which are being shown in Austria for the first time. It also examines Pechstein’s relationship with art collector Wolfgang Gurlitt, who founded the predecessor institution to the Lentos and was involved in the handling of “degenerate” art during the Nazi era. The show runs until 30 August.

The exhibition is part of a broader cultural program that includes a separate display at Kunsthaus Wien on the venue’s 160‑year history, highlighting the intertwined development of Austrian and German modern art.
