Max Pechstein exhibition circuit

In late July 2026 two major European museums launched large‑scale retrospectives of German avant‑garde painter Max Pechstein. The Palazzo Zabarella in Padua, Italy opened the first extensive Italian survey of Pechstein’s work, showcasing over 120 paintings, drawings, prints and photographs that trace his development from his early Dresden period in 1905 through later seascapes and Southern‑sea landscapes. The show runs from 24 October 2026 to 14 March 2027 and includes an early‑bird ticket programme.

A day later, the Lentos Museum of Art in Linz, Austria inaugurated its own comprehensive retrospective, highlighting works from all phases of Pechstein’s career, including South Sea paintings displayed in Austria for the first time. The exhibition also explores his ties to collector Wolfgang Gurlitt and runs until 30 August 2026. Both shows are part of coordinated cultural programmes that emphasize the shared heritage of German and Austrian modern art.

Together, the exhibitions illustrate a coordinated effort across Italy and Austria to re‑examine Pechstein’s legacy and broaden public access to his diverse oeuvre.
