Max Planck Institute study finds heavy metal may increase pain tolerance
A field study conducted by the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences suggests that heavy metal music may increase pain tolerance. Researchers gathered data at the Wacken Open Air festival in Germany, using a cold water test where participants submerged their hands in 2°C water.
After participating in the festival, fans demonstrated a significantly higher ability to endure the discomfort of the ice water compared to a control group. The study, published in ‘Scientific Reports’, noted that while the perceived intensity of the pain did not decrease, participants were able to withstand the sensation for longer periods.
Researchers, including lead author Lydia Schneider, suggest this effect is linked to improved emotional regulation. By expressing and processing negative emotions like anger through aggressive music, fans may develop a psychological resilience that allows them to better manage physical discomfort. The study also highlighted the role of the collective community experience in fostering this resilience, though researchers noted that results were most distinct among participants who consumed moderate or no alcohol.
