Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences conducted field research at the Wacken Open Air festival in Germany to investigate the relationship between heavy metal music and pain tolerance.
The study, published in ‘Scientific Reports’, analyzed 122 fans using a cold water immersion test. Findings indicated that while heavy metal listeners did not exhibit different pain sensitivity compared to a control group, they demonstrated a significantly higher ability to endure discomfort for longer periods.
Lead author and co-author Lydia Schneider suggested the effect is linked to improved emotional regulation. The research posits that by expressing and processing intense or repressed emotions, such as anger, through aggressive music, listeners may develop a psychological resilience. This mechanism may be particularly beneficial for individuals with chronic pain, as repressed anger can otherwise intensify pain sensations.
