Max Verstappen criticizes ex-drivers over F1 rule commentary

Max Verstappen has criticized former Formula 1 drivers for providing “very strange answers” on television regarding the sport's 2026 technical regulations. In an interview with De Telegraaf, the four-time world champion argued that many pundits do not thoroughly study the new rules, leading to inaccurate commentary on how the engines will function.

Verstappen has been a vocal critic of the upcoming regulations, which mandate a 50-50 power split between the internal combustion engine and electrical energy. He previously compared the current racing environment to “Formula E on steroids” and “Mario Kart,” even briefly considering retirement due to the technical direction of the sport. His critiques have coincided with Formula 1 beginning a process to re-evaluate the power distribution to favor the combustion engine.

The dispute follows comments from 1996 world champion Damon Hill. While Hill previously suggested Verstappen should take a break if he was unhappy, he recently expressed concerns on social media that the rise of AI, hybrid systems, and algorithms might diminish the importance of driver skill.
