Max Verstappen's rumored McLaren switch denied as Red Bull speculation swirls
Multiple media outlets have reported that four‑time champion Max Verstappen could join McLaren for the 2027 season, potentially taking the seat of Oscar Piastri. The speculation includes claims that McLaren is in "advanced negotiations" and that a driver swap might be arranged.
Both Oscar Piastri’s manager, former driver Mark Webber, and McLaren CEO Zak Brown have publicly dismissed the rumors. Webber said Piastri’s contract runs to 2028 and that talk of his departure is "nonsense," while Brown affirmed his satisfaction with the current driver pair of Lando Norris and Piastri.
Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya warned that a move to McLaren would be risky for Verstappen, citing team hierarchy and car development concerns. At the same time, Red Bull is reported to be scouting alternatives such as 21‑year‑old Ollie Bearman, who currently drives for Haas, as part of its contingency planning.
Despite the ongoing chatter, no official confirmation from Red Bull, McLaren, or Verstappen’s camp has been provided, and the driver’s future remains uncertain.
