Max Verstappen hails freedom from battery limits in Monaco F1 qualifying

During the Monaco Grand Prix qualifying session, drivers found the new 50/50 hybrid regulation's energy‑management constraints almost irrelevant because the short, brake‑heavy circuit provides ample regenerative opportunities. Max Verstappen said he felt “released” and could “just go full‑throttle,” noting that for the first time this year he did not need to balance the battery level while driving. He praised the slimmer chassis and improved visibility, while still expressing criticism of the hybrid system overall.

Kimi Antonelli edged Verstappen for pole position by just 0.048 seconds, after improving the gap from 0.942 seconds in the previous session. Antonelli’s fastest sector was the second, whereas Verstappen led the first sector. The close battle highlighted the impact of setup changes on the RB21’s performance over Monte Carlo’s many elevation changes and curb sections. Other drivers, including Lewis Hamilton, were less impressed, complaining about tyre pressure rather than the energy‑management aspects.

The session underscored how Monaco’s unique layout temporarily neutralises the series‑wide push for stricter battery utilisation, offering a rare glimpse of unrestricted driving under the new hybrid era.
