Max Verstappen identifies Red Bull technical issues in Madrid
Max Verstappen has identified key areas for improvement for Red Bull Racing ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix qualifying sessions in Madrid. Following practice sessions where he finished fifth and sixth, Verstappen noted that the team needs to enhance single-lap performance and better understand tire behavior during long stints.
Verstappen reported difficulties with the RB22, specifically citing an unstable rear end when exiting corners and unexpected understeer. While the team tested various rear wing configurations, they have yet to find a perfectly balanced setup. Verstappen expressed a need for more speed when running on low fuel and soft tires to remain competitive against Mercedes.
Separately, Verstappen addressed his decision to extend his contract with Red Bull through 2030. While he remains committed to the sport due to his love for competition, he admitted he is currently not finding joy in the driving experience itself. He criticized the 2026 Formula 1 regulations, suggesting the current car characteristics feel disconnected from the driver's input and reward different driving styles than in the past.
