Max Verstappen Linked to McLaren as F1 Driver Market Shifts

Informal discussions have taken place between McLaren and the inner circle of three‑time world champion Max Verstappen, sparking speculation that the Dutch driver could join the Woking team. McLaren has not confirmed the talks, and Verstappen dismissed the rumors, stating he will address any news directly. The speculation follows the Austrian Grand Prix where Verstappen finished second and Lando Norris of McLaren noted other drivers also express interest in the team.

At the same time, contract options have been exercised for two other top drivers. Lewis Hamilton’s performance clause triggered an automatic extension with Ferrari for a third season, while Mercedes exercised its option on George Russell, securing him through 2027 and continuing the partnership with teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Analysts note that rumours about Verstappen’s availability are common whenever his Red Bull contract clauses could permit a move, and recent meetings in Austria with Red Bull’s major shareholders underscore his pivotal role for the team.
