Max Verstappen's Red Bull exit clause sparks McLaren transfer talks

World champion Max Verstappen, whose contract with Red Bull runs to 2028, faces an activation of a performance‑related exit clause that would allow him to leave if he is not among the top two drivers before the summer break. After a poor showing at Silverstone that left him seventh in the standings, the clause is now mathematically certain to trigger.

Multiple reports indicate that McLaren is preparing a possible deal, with Bahrain‑based sponsors and sovereign wealth funds said to be ready to cover Verstappen’s US$70‑117 million annual salary. Red Bull insiders say the team is already planning for a Verstappen announcement, and former driver Ralf Schumacher has claimed the Dutchman has “lost faith” in the outfit. Negotiations reportedly involve a driver swap that could see Oscar Piastri move to Red Bull.

Red Bull has allegedly tried to buy out the clause, but Verstappen is said to have rejected the offer. The growing tension follows a series of technical problems with the RB22 and public criticism from the driver after the Silverstone weekend.
