Max Verstappen threatens to quit F1 over 2027 engine rule changes at Canadian GP
Four-time world champion Max Verstappen reiterated his threat to leave Formula 1 if the FIA does not adopt the proposed 2027 engine regulation changes. Speaking after qualifying at the Canadian Grand Prix, Verstappen said a 60‑40 split in energy management is the "minimum" required for him to stay, calling the current rules "not enjoyable" and overly complex.
He criticised the modern car setup, citing severe bouncing and poor straight‑line performance, and suggested resistance from some manufacturers—particularly Ferrari—while noting Mercedes' support. Verstappen also highlighted his recent GT racing experience at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, describing it as "pure racing" and using it to illustrate his desire for a less artificial, more natural Formula 1 competition.
