Max Verstappen threatens to quit F1 over 2027 hybrid power‑unit rules

World champion Max Verstappen warned that he will leave Formula 1 if the FIA does not implement the proposed 60‑40 split between internal‑combustion and electric power for the 2027 season. The regulator’s draft aims to increase fuel flow and reduce the contribution of the MGU‑K, shifting more reliance onto the V6 engine.

Audi, Honda and Ferrari have opposed the changes, arguing that higher fuel flow would require larger fuel tanks and costly chassis revisions. Verstappen said the current package is mentally unsustainable and called for decisive leadership from the FIA and Formula 1 management, stressing that the sport needs a clear direction on hybrid power.

Red Bull and Mercedes support the driver’s stance, while other manufacturers are lobbying to delay the reforms to 2028 or make only cosmetic adjustments. The dispute is intensifying ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, with the outcome set to shape the technical direction of the sport for years to come.
