Max Verstappen threatens to quit Formula 1 over disputed engine rule change

After finishing seventh in the Canadian sprint, four‑time world champion Max Verstappen said continuing under the current regulatory plan would be "mentally unsustainable" and warned he could leave Formula 1 at the end of the season if the proposed engine‑unit rule change is not approved.

The FIA is considering shifting the hybrid power‑unit split from a 50:50 balance between internal‑combustion and electric components to a 60:40 split favoring the combustion side for 2027. Mercedes and Red Bull have welcomed the proposal, while Ferrari, Honda and Audi are opposed, risking the loss of the required votes to adopt the change under F1’s governance protocol.

Verstappen, who described the current racing format as akin to "Mario Kart," said a season without the amendment would be "a very long year" he does not want to endure, adding that he would retire from the sport if the situation remains unchanged.
