Max Verstappen's future at Red Bull faces uncertainty

Speculation regarding Max Verstappen’s future with Red Bull Racing has intensified following a challenging start to the 2026 season. Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher suggests that the relationship between the four-time world champion and the team may have reached a breaking point due to the team’s inability to provide a competitive and drivable car under new regulations.

While Verstappen is under contract until 2028, performance-related clauses may allow for an earlier departure. Potential destinations for the Dutchman include McLaren, though former Haas principal Guenther Steiner noted that Verstappen would likely only move to a team perceived as superior to Red Bull. Steiner also suggested that Mercedes may no longer view Verstappen as a necessity, having identified Andrea Kimi Antonelli as a potential successor.

The uncertainty is also impacting the broader driver market. Schumacher noted that Carlos Sainz’s decision to decline an offer from Williams could be linked to Verstappen’s potential exit, as Sainz may be eyeing an opportunity at Red Bull. Meanwhile, Williams continues to face internal friction and technical difficulties following errors in their car development process.
