Maximinopolis Byzantine temple restored in Rhodope

The central Byzantine temple of Maximinopolis has been officially handed over to the local church and the community of Rhodope following a comprehensive restoration project. The monument, which dates between the 11th and 13th centuries, features a unique heptagonal floor plan and served as the episcopal church for the ancient city.

Maximinopolis was a significant Byzantine administrative and ecclesiastical center founded by Emperor Maximinus in the late 3rd or early 4th century. Located approximately seven kilometers west of Komotini, the site remains the only visible monument within the city's fortifications. The restoration work, costing 1.5 million euros, was funded by the Recovery Fund and implemented by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Rhodope.

During a visit to the region, Culture Minister Lina Mendoni also inspected the Imaret of Komotini, a potential candidate for the oldest Ottoman monument in Europe, which is being prepared for use as an exhibition space. Additionally, discussions are underway regarding the restoration of the Asteria cinema to complement the historical site of the Imaret.
