Restoration of Byzantine temple in Maximinopolis
Overview
The Byzantine temple in Maximinopolis, located in the Rodopi region, has undergone a 1.5 million euro restoration project funded by the Recovery Fund. The work included structural repairs, the conservation of marble sculptures, and the protection of floors and frescoes.
Following the restoration, Culture Minister Lina Mendoni oversaw the inauguration of the site, where the temple was returned to its original use for religious services through a blessing ceremony. The monument, which dates between the 11th and 13th centuries, is noted for its unique heptagonal floor plan.
In addition to the temple, Minister Mendoni inspected other cultural sites in the region, including the Komotini Music Hall and the Imaret of Komotini, which is being prepared as an exhibition space.
