Mayo-Yoreme people participate in indigenous rights law consultation

The National Institute of Indigenous Peoples (INPI) held a regional assembly in El Fuerte, Sinaloa, to facilitate a prior, free, and informed consultation for the creation of Mexico’s first General Law on the Rights of Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples.

During the assembly, the Mayo-Yoreme people, traditional authorities, and government representatives discussed key legislative elements. These include the recognition of indigenous communities as subjects of public law, self-determination, autonomy, and legal pluralism. The dialogue also addressed the protection of territories, cultural heritage, languages, and access to essential infrastructure and services.
