Mayor İsmail Yetişkin's health at risk during detention

Seferihisar Mayor İsmail Yetişkin was taken into custody on 25 June. He suffers from chronic diabetes, kidney failure and a previous heart bypass, requiring hemodialysis three times a week for about eight hours each session.

His lawyer, Serhat Gökalp, warned that the detention environment could interrupt the treatment, leading to fluid and toxin buildup, dangerous electrolyte changes, heart‑rhythm problems, lung edema and potentially fatal complications. Gökalp called for continuous medical supervision and immediate access to a qualified dialysis centre, citing the mayor’s right to life and human‑rights protections.

Authorities said the investigation will continue, the mayor is due to be transferred to court, and he is scheduled to resume dialysis on Monday.
