João Pessoa mayor launches 140‑ton corn aid for 60,000 families

Mayor Leo Bezerra of João Pessoa started on Monday, 15 June, a distribution of 140 tonnes of corn intended for about 60,000 families living in social vulnerability. The aid programme will run through Wednesday, 17 June, and is part of the municipal Food Acquisition Program that aims to guarantee food security during the June festivities.

The distribution is coordinated by the Secretariat of Social Development and is supported by a task‑force that includes the secretariats of Housing, Human Rights, Urban Development, Infrastructure, the Metropolitan Civil Guard and the Municipal Urban Cleaning Agency. Corn is delivered directly to families through Social Assistance Reference Centers, hospitals, the municipal food bank and housing complexes, with each household receiving up to three kilograms. The first lady, Bruna Nóbrega, attended the ceremony.

The initiative also targets residents of municipal housing projects, expected to benefit around 14 000 people, and underscores the city’s commitment to providing essential nutrition to its most vulnerable citizens.
