Mayor Leo Bezerra launches child‑labor campaign in João Pessoa
On June 12, the World Day for the Elimination of Child Labour, João Pessoa mayor Leo Bezerra inaugurated the “Cartão Vermelho ao Trabalho Infantil” campaign. The initiative aims to reinforce the municipal protection network for children and adolescents by expanding education slots, offering civic and vocational courses, and strengthening partnerships with Councils of Guardianship, Social Assistance Reference Centers and other local agencies.
The event, held at the Centro Administrativo Municipal auditorium, featured cultural performances by youth served by municipal programs and presented the city’s 2026 strategy to combat child labour. Mayor Bezerra emphasized that “investing in quality education and qualification courses is essential to protect our children and keep them out of work.” Human‑rights secretary Késsia Liliana Bezerra reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to safeguarding children’s rights, while education secretary Luciana Dias highlighted the collaborative effort across municipal departments. The campaign will be supported by outreach activities in the coming days to raise public awareness.
