Mayor Manuel Alonso Cerezo under fire for hiring surge and traffic mismanagement in Córdoba

Manuel Alonso Cerezo expanded the municipal payroll in Córdoba by adding 102 trust‑position posts during the first quarter of 2026, raising the total from 777 to 879, while the number of permanent posts stayed at 388. No new permanent jobs were created. Within weeks, the mayor dismissed 40 of those newly hired staff.

At the same time, Córdoba residents report a lack of municipal traffic agents on major streets, leading to congestion and accidents. The mayor said he was unaware of the shortfall and would review the issue. Allegations have surfaced against traffic chief David Flores, nicknamed “El Gavilán,” accusing him of extorting merchants, colluding with organized crime, and facilitating human‑trafficking networks linked to hotels in nearby Cancún.
