A large wildfire erupted on 31 July 2026 in the Boeotia region of Greece beneath an overhead power line serving a privately‑operated wind farm. The blaze quickly spread to western Attica, fueled by strong winds that reached up to 130 km/h, and burned thousands of hectares of forest, agricultural land and homes.

A preliminary investigation by the Fire Service’s Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes (DAEE) found technical deficiencies, construction flaws and a lack of vegetation clearance along the 42‑km transmission network (about 4 km overhead and 38 km underground). The same line had ignited a smaller fire on 27 June 2026, roughly 150 m from the later ignition point. Evidence points to a short‑circuit or electrical arcing that produced sparks, igniting dry vegetation.

Three suspects – Giannis Apostolou, mayor of Stylida, a contractor involved in building the aerial network, and the owner of the wind‑farm company – were placed in pre‑trial detention after a marathon hearing on 6–7 August. The Greek authorities also ordered the temporary suspension of the entire wind‑farm’s operation and a comprehensive technical inspection of the transmission network. In addition, two firefighting helicopters collided during the suppression effort, killing a Danish pilot and a Greek aerial coordinator.
