Mayor of Trevélez Accused of Misusing Public Housing Allocation

The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) has lodged a criminal complaint with the Granada prosecutor's office against Adrián Gallegos, the mayor of Trevélez (People's Party), alleging prevarication, embezzlement and fraud. The case concerns the mayor’s allocation of one of two apartments that the town council bought to rent to young residents. The council purchased a three‑storey building for €75,000 and earmarked two units, priced at €38,000 and €35,000, with monthly rents of €260 and €240 for applicants aged 25‑35 who were long‑term residents.

According to the complaint, Gallegos used his position to select the larger unit for himself, bypassing transparent selection criteria and after surrendering municipal property‑management powers to another councilor. The PSOE argues the act violates statutes on illicit negotiations and influence‑peddling. Gallegos denies wrongdoing, asserting the process was legal and that the rental prices reflect the council’s acquisition cost, framing the initiative as part of an anti‑depopulation policy to help young people obtain housing.

The investigation also names deputy mayor Ana Rosa Herrera and other council members as potentially involved.
