Mayor Sandro Mabel drives Goiânia spending surge and backs Senate hopefuls

Mayor Sandro Mabel presented Goiânia's first‑quarter financial report on July 6, showing a fiscal rebalancing and a 719 % jump in public investment to R$ 292.9 million, up from R$ 35.7 million the previous year. The surge targets health and education, with health spending rising to 40.82 % of the budget, the repayment of R$ 276 million in legacy debts, and the launch of the Pafus programme that allocates up to R$ 200,000 annually to each of the city's 117 health units. Eight new UPAs are planned, three already inaugurated, and 20‑30 larger health centres are slated for construction. In education, liquidated resources increased to 27.46 % of the budget, tablet and notebook distribution and digital‑board upgrades were completed, and all school‑age children are now enrolled. The administration also secured R$ 500 million from the federal Climate Fund for drainage, pipelines and linear‑park projects after improving its credit rating from C to A, and is advancing 192 engineering projects, including more than 60 small bridges and a new sports complex on the former Cine Canoeiro site.

Politically, Mabel announced his support for former Goiás first‑lady Gracinha Caiado and former Aparecida de Goiânia mayor Gustavo Mendanha in the 2026 Senate race, aligning the capital's influence with the governing coalition led by Governor Daniel Vilela and former Governor Ronaldo Caiado. The endorsements aim to strengthen regional representation in the National Congress and solidify the governor‑backed slate for the upcoming elections.
