Crotone opposition demands urgent asbestos monitoring and cleanup

The Per La Nostra Crotone opposition group has filed a formal motion in the Crotone City Council, demanding that the administration implement an organic plan for the census, monitoring, and remediation of asbestos within the city.

The motion follows what councilors described as an unsatisfactory response to previous inquiries. The group criticized the municipality for relying on property owners to self-report asbestos rather than conducting official investigations. Key areas of concern include the former General Markets in the Vescovatello area, where degraded asbestos materials have been identified following the collapse of warehouse structures.

The opposition is calling for a new Municipal Asbestos Plan to be presented within 90 days. They are also requesting environmental monitoring of surrounding agricultural lands and measures to protect residents, workers, and students, particularly due to the proximity of the Gravina school institute.
