Crotone municipal environmental and safety concerns

Local political figures in Crotone have raised urgent concerns regarding public safety and environmental hazards within the city. In late October, the Per La Nostra Crotone opposition group filed a motion in the City Council demanding a formal plan for the census, monitoring, and remediation of asbestos. The group criticized the current administration for relying on self-reporting by property owners and highlighted risks in the Vescovatello area, specifically near the former General Markets and the Gravina school institute. They requested a Municipal Asbestos Plan be presented within 90 days to protect residents and agricultural lands. By early November, attention shifted to flood prevention. Councilor Sebastiano Aloia requested action from the Reclamation Consortium regarding flood risks in the Gabella area. Following an inspection on November 1, Aloia raised concerns about the maintenance of the Telesio, Fallao, and Ponticelli torrents, as well as a network of channels numbered 17 through 47. The councilor noted that cleaning efforts appeared limited to only certain sections of the hydraulic network. He is seeking clarification on the effectiveness of completed works, the condition of river mouths to ensure proper water flow, and a schedule of maintenance performed in 2025 and 2026. Aloia has also requested a joint inspection with technical experts to address potential obstructions that could lead to the flooding of homes and agricultural land. In a subsequent development, Aloia formally requested clarifications from the Reclamation Consortium regarding hydraulic safety following inspections in Contrada Nord. This inquiry continues to focus on maintenance and flood prevention for the Telesio, Fallao, and Ponticelli torrents, alongside the local canal network. Separately, the Municipality of Crotone has moved to enhance urban security through new investments.
