Mayors of Medan and Batam champion sports development through local competitions

Mayor Rico Tri Putra Bayu Waas of Medan opened the BMX Drag Bike Cup 2026 on 1 August, urging participants to prioritize sportsmanship, discipline and perseverance. He highlighted the event as a platform for athletes to gain experience and showcase Medan’s talent at provincial, national and international levels, and affirmed the city’s commitment to sustained support for sports through collaboration with KONI, local clubs and schools.

Mayor Amsakar Achmad of Batam inaugurated the Batam Open Karate Championship II 2026 on the same day, stressing the importance of continuous competition for developing karate athletes. He praised the provincial and city branches of the Federation of Karate‑Do Indonesia (FORKI) and outlined four pillars for athlete development: regular competitions, measured training programs, professional organization management, and effective coaching. Both mayors called for integrity among officials and athletes and emphasized that ongoing events are essential for nurturing future champions.
