Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders to anchor new shipbuilding cluster in Maharashtra

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park Maharashtra Limited (NSHIPML) to develop a major shipbuilding center at the proposed Greenfield Shipbuilding Industrial Cluster in Dighi, Raigad district, Maharashtra.

The project aims to expand MDL’s operations from its traditional focus on warships and submarines into the construction of large commercial vessels. The initiative is part of a larger effort under the National Shipbuilding Mission to create plug-and-play infrastructure for shipbuilding and repair. The cluster is expected to cover 2,000 acres with a 2.6 km waterfront.

Investment estimates for the project range between ₹15,000 crore and ₹27,000 crore. Once operational, the facility is projected to achieve an annual shipbuilding capacity of at least 1.2 to 2 million gross tonnes. The development is expected to generate approximately 15,000 direct and 75,000 indirect employment opportunities while strengthening India’s domestic maritime supply chain and competitiveness.
