Mazda aims for lightweight next-gen MX-5 Roadster

Mazda CEO Katsuhiro Mago has revealed development directions for the next generation of the MX-5 Roadster (tentatively named the NE model). A primary focus for the upcoming model is maintaining the vehicle's signature lightweight characteristics while preparing for a future that may include internal combustion engine-free scenarios.

While a full transition to battery electric vehicles (BEV) has not been officially confirmed, the development team is aiming for a weight target between 1,000kg and 1,200kg. This goal is intended to preserve the 'Jinba Ittai' (oneness of horse and rider) driving experience, even as the addition of batteries and motors typically increases vehicle mass.

Potential powertrain options for the next generation include gasoline engines, hybrid systems, and BEVs. There is speculation regarding the inclusion of Mazda's new generation 2.5-liter four-cylinder SKYACTIV-Z engine. Although an official release date has not been announced, industry projections suggest the next generation could arrive in 2028 or later.
