The Mazda Roadster (MX-5) remains a significant focus in both the current consumer market and future automotive development.

In the existing market, the ND series continues to see high demand for customization and in the used car sector. Specialized styling packages, such as the ‘Dark Knight’ edition by DAMD Inc., are available to enhance vehicle aesthetics. Used prices for the ND model vary between approximately 1.5 million and 11 million yen, with specific interest noted in the 2022 ND1 version for its ‘Kinematic Posture Control’ technology.

Recent developments within the ND generation include the introduction of the ‘PS’ (Pure Sport) special edition. This model prioritizes driving pleasure through chassis tuning and weight reduction rather than increased power, featuring lightweight RAYS wheels, Brembo brake calipers, and Bilstein dampers with unique tuning to balance spring rate and damping force. To meet new exterior noise regulations, Mazda has also optimized intake and exhaust systems using induction sound enhancers to maintain a ‘natural engine note’ that responds to driver input.

Looking toward the future, Mazda CEO Katsuhiro Mago has outlined development goals for the next-generation model, tentatively named the NE. The company aims to maintain a lightweight profile of 1,000kg to 1,200kg to preserve the ‘Jinba Ittai’ driving experience. While the powertrain remains flexible—potentially including gasoline engines, hybrid systems, or battery electric vehicles—the focus is on managing the increased mass associated with electrification. Industry projections suggest this next generation may arrive in 2028 or later.
