Mazda expands electric vehicle strategy through Changan partnership

Mazda is expanding its electric vehicle (EV) lineup through an ongoing partnership with Chinese manufacturer Changan. While the company continues to develop its own proprietary technology, it is utilizing Changan’s platforms as a shortcut to accelerate its EV offerings in global markets.

Mazda currently sells the 6e and CX-6e models in export markets, both of which are produced in China. The company has entered negotiations with Changan to introduce additional models, with two more collaborative models planned for the period between 2028 and 2030. Vinesh Bhindi, Managing Director of Mazda Australia, stated that the partnership allows the company to expand its EV range without the need to develop every model from the ground up.

This strategy is partly driven by the need to meet strict emission regulations, particularly in Europe, where manufacturers face high penalties for exceeding fleet emission limits. Mazda has already had to adjust its internal combustion engine offerings, such as removing the 2.0-liter engine from the MX-5, due to tightening regulations. The company emphasizes that these collaborative models will involve significant effort to ensure they remain distinctly recognizable as Mazda vehicles.
