Mazda targets profit boost with launch of new CX‑5 model

Mazda held its shareholder meeting on 24 June and President Mako stressed a shift toward profit‑oriented management, citing the new CX‑5 as the centerpiece of a turnaround plan. The company reported a 500 billion‑yen profit for the year, ending a five‑year decline, and forecast global sales of 1.32 million vehicles for the current fiscal year.

The refreshed CX‑5 is larger overall, features a new “Wearable Gear” design, a 15.6‑inch central display, integrated Google services and a touch‑first cockpit that replaces the historic rotary controller. Safety equipment now includes standard 360‑degree cameras and advanced driver‑assist systems, while the powertrain is a 187‑horsepower 2.5‑liter gasoline engine. Within its first month the model sold 10,000 units, with strong demand for the top‑grade L trim and the rhodium‑white premium colour. Mazda also confirmed progress on its electrification hub at the Iwakuni plant and reaffirmed a commitment to domestic production of 700,000 units despite recent US tariff pressures.
