Mazda refreshes lineup, CX‑5 surge fuels profit
Overview
Mazda’s 2026–27 model-year refresh continues to drive growth. Following the third-generation CX-5’s strong launch in Japan and Australia, orders opened in Taiwan on 28 July, featuring a longer wheelbase and updated infotainment.
On 4 August, Mazda reported record FY2027 Q1 results, with sales of ¥1.2857 trillion and an operating profit of ¥328 billion, reversing the previous year's loss. This turnaround was supported by CX-5 shipments, which reached 304,000 units globally, and favorable yen depreciation, despite a ¥30 billion tariff hit in the U.S.
Market momentum for the CX-5 has remained high, with cumulative orders exceeding 10,000 units in its first month, surpassing sales targets fivefold. In response, the Kobe Mazda Kitagami Store in Hyogo Prefecture scheduled highway test drive events for 22–23 August to showcase the vehicle's stability and driver assistance features.
Regarding future product development, Mazda confirmed a next-generation CX-3 compact crossover is under development. A prototype featuring the updated Kodo design language suggests a larger body intended to improve interior space and cargo capacity. Production is slated to begin in 2027 at the AutoAlliance plant in Thailand for Japan and ASEAN markets, utilizing hybrid or mild-hybrid powertrains to support Mazda’s electrification strategy. The CX-3 will serve as an entry-level offering alongside the CX-30.
