Mazda to replace MX-5 2.0L engine with 1.5L model in UK

Mazda is discontinuing the 2.0-liter engine for the MX-5 roadster in the United Kingdom starting in January 2027. The decision is driven by stricter European Union emissions regulations, which made the larger engine impossible to maintain in production. While the UK previously held a dispensation, that period has now expired.

For the 2027 model year, the MX-5 will exclusively feature a 1.5-liter Skyactiv-G engine. This engine has received a slight power increase, now producing 134 horsepower and 155 Nm of torque, compared to the previous 130 horsepower. The CO2 emissions for this configuration are expected to fall to 139 grams per kilometer.

Technical changes accompanying the engine swap include the removal of the mechanical limited-slip differential, as the 1.5-liter models will feature an open differential. All 1.5-liter versions will be equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission. To offset the loss of power, Mazda is introducing updated Homura and Homura Plus trim levels, which include features such as Recaro seats, Bilstein dampers, and Brembo brakes. Additionally, a new Yakudo special edition will be available, featuring Alcantara interiors and a classic soft top.
