Mazda model and engine lineup changes

Mazda is implementing changes to its vehicle lineup, including the discontinuation of specific models and engines.

In August 2026, the company announced that production of the Mazda2 compact hatchback would end by the close of fiscal year 2026, as the manufacturer shifts focus toward larger and electrified models.

Later that month, Mazda announced it would discontinue the 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine for the MX-5 in the United Kingdom due to tightening emissions regulations. Following the end of a regulatory exception period, the UK MX-5 lineup will transition to a 1.5-liter Skyactiv-G engine starting in January 2027. Mazda UK Managing Director Jeremy Thomson noted that while the loss of the larger engine is regrettable, the 1.5-liter engine remains central to the model's character.

For the 2027 model year, the MX-5 will exclusively feature the 1.5-liter engine, which has received a slight power increase to 134 horsepower and 155 Nm of torque. This configuration is expected to result in CO2 emissions of 139 grams per kilometer. Technical updates accompanying this transition include the replacement of the mechanical limited-slip differential with an open differential, though all 1.5-liter versions will retain a 6-speed manual transmission. To offset the reduction in power, Mazda is introducing updated Homura and Homura Plus trim levels featuring Recaro seats, Bilstein dampers, and Brembo brakes, alongside a new Yakudo special edition.
