Mazda’s Oberursel Center Crafts Design for New CX‑6e Electric SUV
Mazda’s European design centre in Oberursel, Hesse, Germany, is shaping the look and interior of the upcoming CX‑6e electric SUV. Modelers hand‑sculpt clay models, applying soft modelling compound with their thumbs and refining details with specialized tools until the clay replica matches the planned production vehicle. The centre, part of Mazda Motor Europe, follows the company’s Kodo ("Soul of Motion") design philosophy, aiming for emotional appeal and a sense of motion even at rest. Jo Stenuit, design director at Mazda Motor Europe, says the team focuses on proportion, surface treatment and a restrained, high‑quality aesthetic without excessive ornamentation. Research in the CMF (Color, Materials & Finish) department explores new materials such as cork and vegan, recyclable interiors, and draws inspiration from furniture and fashion trends. The CX‑6e will feature a new “Nightfall Vi” deep‑purple hue alongside Mazda’s long‑standing “Soul Red Crystal” and a newly introduced navy‑blue hero colour. The project underscores Mazda’s strategy of combining Japanese craftsmanship heritage with German hand‑craft expertise to differentiate its electric‑vehicle lineup from other Asian brands.
