Mazovia heating regulations and coal price volatility
In the Mazovia region of Poland, strict anti-smog regulations are in effect, governing the types of heating devices, technical parameters, and fuel quality allowed for residential and non-residential buildings. Violations of these rules, which include restrictions on certain boilers, stoves, and fireplaces, can result in fines of 500 PLN or, if the case reaches court, penalties as high as 5,000 PLN. The regulations apply to the entire Mazovian Voivodeship, with additional restrictions in Warsaw and nine surrounding counties.
Simultaneously, the heating fuel market is experiencing volatility. Coal prices, currently ranging between 1,700 and 2,500 PLN per ton, are highly sensitive to weather conditions and supply levels. Experts suggest that a sudden drop in temperature could drive prices up by as much as 200 PLN per ton due to depleted stocks and high demand. Pellet prices remain comparable to coal, trading between 1,800 and 2,500 PLN per ton. Supply challenges persist, as domestic production struggles to meet demand and international imports, such as coal from Colombia, face logistical delays and competition.
