Mazovian Sejmik passes resolution for unlimited wild boar culling in Warsaw

The Mazovian Voivodeship Sejmik has passed a resolution allowing for the culling of wild boars in Warsaw without a fixed numerical limit. The measure permits the removal of animals deemed to have “lost their natural fear of humans” or those posing an extraordinary threat to life, health, or the economy.

Animal rights organizations have raised several objections to the resolution, including the lack of a population cap, potential contradictions with animal protection laws, and a flawed consultation process that lasted only 11 days. Critics also pointed to a potential conflict of interest, noting that the project was prepared by a department headed by Tomasz Krasowski, who also serves as vice president of the Polish Hunting Association.

The decision follows a significant rise in reported wild boar sightings and incidents in Warsaw, with reports increasing from 4,713 in 2023 to over 14,000 in the first seven months of 2026. While the Polish Hunting Association and the Regional Council for Nature Protection supported the measure, others have called for the Mazovian Voivode to investigate its legality. A protest is scheduled for September 28 at Bank Square in Warsaw to oppose the resolution.
